Virtual Environment for the Design and Manufacture of Aeronautical Turbines (ENVIDIA)

The main objective of Turbo Propulsor Industry ITP, the Polytechnic University of Madrid UPM, the University of the Basque Country UPV-EHU and the IMDEA Materials Institute in this project is to radically improve their simulation capabilities related to the turbines of the future (especially applicable to the turbine module of Rolls-Royce’s UltraFan engine and for which ITP is responsible), walking towards the concept of Virtual Motor, and allowing to migrate towards a fully novel engine configuration in a safe, robust, efficient and economically viable way. To achieve this objective, the project will be structured in three fundamental activities based on simulation: 1)High fidelity models: development of new algorithms and methodologies to increase our knowledge of physics in a particular discipline. 2) Multi-disciplinary design and optimisation: generation of new numerical methods to achieve complex simulations that capture in a more realistic way the multi-disciplinary phenomena that occur in an aeronautical engine. 3)Simulation of manufacturing processes: new numerical methods that allow us to predict and optimise the way in which designs become tangible components that respond to the required requirements.
