RESEARCH IN THE FRACTIONATION OF OILS ENRICHED WITH PRECURSORS OF LIPIDIC MEDIATORS WITH ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND PRO-RESOLUTIVE ACTIVITY. APPLICATION TO THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF DRESSINGS FOR TREATMENT OF CHRONIC WOUND HEALING

One of the main unresolved problems of chronic wounds to favor their healing, is related to the inflammatory response that takes place in the wound. Inflammation is essentially a protective reaction; however, it must be self-limited. Exaggerated or persistent inflammation can be associated with tissue damage. With the aim of minimising this problem, this project RETOS (R1) has been proposed, which is presented in this report, whose title is: Research in the fractionation of oils enriched with precursors of lipid mediators with anti-inflammatory and pro-resolutive activity and its application to the design and development of dressings for treatment of healing of chronic wounds and burns, and whose purpose is the development of advanced dressings for the healing and healing of chronic wounds incorporating natural oils enriched in precursors or lipid mediators with anti-inflammatory and pro-resolutive properties. These oils will be designed and developed by Solutex which will be omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA enriched with precursors of lipid mediators SPMs or SPMs that possess not only anti-inflammatory but pro-resolutive capacity of inflammation, a very appropriate concept for chronic unresolved inflammations, such as diabetic wounds that do not heal and burn. To achieve greater effectiveness in the wound, the encapsulation of these oils will be studied to achieve a progressive and effective release over time, being able to incorporate the wound in different dressings with different formats (hydrogels, gauzes) according to the characteristics and requirements of the wound. And studying very well the characteristics of these final dressings and their influence on the wound. The encapsulation study to define the appropriate encapsulating materials and the development of the dressings will be carried out by the technological center- AITEX specialists in the development and application of new encapsulation technologies and development of new dressings in the biomedical field. In order to determine the viability of the developed dressings it will be necessary to carry out preclinical tests both in vitro and in vivo, which will be carried out by the Institute of Health Research La Fe specialists in burns and wounds of difficult healing. In addition, in the last phase of the Project, the beginning of a clinical study is contemplated, in which the unit of large burns of the Hospital La Fe will collaborate, in order to verify the effectiveness of the dressings in real conditions. In so far as it is necessary to emphasise that the healing of chronic wounds is an unresolved social problem today, despite having products on the market, different dressings for each stage of wound healing, do not end up solving the wound and healing. Therefore, this Project aims to develop a single technically advanced product that serves as an anti-inflammatory and resolute wound without the need to use several dressings for each of the stages but, a single product serves as an anti-inflammatory wound, and resolves it reaching the end of the process This is a very ambitious project that fits perfectly with the purpose of this call RETOS (R1). It is a great social challenge to be able to achieve this type of advanced dressings being a very innovative product on the market since there is currently no similar product that incorporates oils enriched in lipid precursors in encapsulated and immobilised format on a substrate that favors its application and release in the wound. For this, the Project will have a totally complementary technical consortium, which will allow the achievement of the proposed objective, and will allow the obtaining of a product with an important niche market and of great interest.
