DEVELOPMENT OF LOW-INVESTMENT PROCESSES, THERMOPLASTIC RTM, FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF AUTOMOTIVE CARBON STRUCTURES (RIACARTP)

The automotive industry is increasingly betting on research, development and innovation, aware of the dynamism of the sector and the need to create new products that adapt to their increasingly demanding needs. Cars make up 12 % of total CO2 emissions. According to European regulations, new cars must reduce their emissions to 130 grams of CO2 by 2015 and 95 gene 2020. A 10 % reduction in weight in the vehicle achieves a 7 % reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Lightening that places us in the smart, sustainable and integrated Transport Challenge. To lighten the vehicle components, we must use carbon fiber composite materials for their greatest potential. The use of these materials for light solutions in the automotive market is still incipient due to the costs associated with the manufacturing process and the limited production capacity. In this scenario, the objective of the RIACARTP project is the development of a process of manufacture of high productivity thermoplastic composite structures for Automobiles, and that responds to the needs of the sector (times, costs, recyclability). The proposed solution is a process with a high degree of automation but does not involve large investments in equipment/infrastructures.It is intended to develop a process based on the sum of an automated preforming process complemented by a process with a high degree of automation but that does not involve large investments in equipment/infrastructures. We will technically validate a demonstrator that can directly replace a current metal component of a car that allows the technologies developed to be easily transferred to other applications/components in the sector. The RIACARTP project consortium consists of two entities: IDEC, S.L. Leader and Project Coordinator and TECNALIA R&I, who will develop the Technical Coordination of the same. Both partners have extensive experience in the field of composite materials and have maintained a strong relationship of years in joint developments, relevant in the field of carbon fiber applied to different industrial sectors. This RIACARTP Challenges project is part of a joint strategy of Idec and Tecnalia and a broader commitment based on the following key aspects: *The IDEC company in its strategic plan has multiplied its capabilities, now it must find new markets where RTM technology and composite materials play a fundamental role. *On the other hand, Spain is a leader in the manufacture of carbon fibre structures for the aeronautical sector. Likewise, Spain is also a leader in the manufacture of components for automotive although, traditionally through technologies based on metal solutions. The transfer of technology between these two sectors is key in this case and can bring an important competitive advantage to both sectors. *In the face of this situation and this new opportunity, Idec and Tecnalia make a joint strategic commitment that includes the following phases: — Basic development of technology and technological demonstrators (RIACAR Challenges project): 2015-17 -Constitution of Joint Venture between IDEC and Tecnalia (2017-18) -Incorporation of Tier 1 national (pej. Gestamp) as a partner to the project (2018) -Industrialisation of the process and offer to OEM, automotive finalist builder (2018-20) *Final objective of this new initiative: Sell subassemblies for the automotive sector in carbon fiber.
