Sea turtles are now protected. In the French Antilles, a biodiversity hotspot, 5 species frequent the territories of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Saint-Martin for their food and/or reproduction. 3 species nest on the beaches of Martinique: — The nested turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) – The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) – The lute turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Today, sea turtle populations have declined due to overexploitation by humans and threats remain. Yet sea turtles are species that indicate the quality of an environment. A National Action Plan (NAP), aimed at restoring sea turtle populations, was therefore put in place in 2006 at the scale of the French Antilles. It is available locally in Guadeloupe and Martinique. The request for funding covers knowledge of populations and communication and awareness-raising. Expected actions: — Study of the evolution of sea turtle numbers on feeding areas, – Study of marine turtle feeding areas in Martinique by satellite monitoring, – Completion of a synthesis of data on the range of turtles feeding in the French Antilles, – Conduct of a study on fidelity to feeding sites by individual identification.
