Creation of the Caribbean Institute for Nuclear Imaging, Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancers

The COVID-19 pandemic, due to its insular isolation for several months, highlighted Martinique’s still too high health vulnerability. Indeed, during cancer courses, key stages are sometimes not carried out because some evaluations of extensions are possible only in the hexagon. These delays have been particularly prolonged during the pandemic. Hence the imperative need to increase the health autonomy of the island and thus strengthen the resilience of Martinique, which over the years sees exponentially increasing the number of cancers (prostate cancer, breast cancer...), endometriosis, cardiac pathologies and neurodegenerative pathologies (Alzheimer, multiple sclerosis). The project to create the Caribbean Institute for Nuclear Imaging, Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancers, in gestation at CHUM, finds its legitimacy here: a health complex of excellence, a real quantum leap in the management of these pathologies, it will bring an indispensable medical performance both in Martinique and on the Caribbean basin and will thus be the initiator of a new organizational dynamic. The unique configuration of this institute will bring together, in one place, the cyclotron and the clinical and radiopharmaceutical activities allowing optimal management of Martinician and Caribbean patients suffering in particular from cancer.
