In 2017, the Dunkirk Urban Community was awarded the ERDF call for projects “Nature en Ville” as part of its project “A New Place for Water and Nature in the Urban Area of Dunkirk”. The first phase of the project took place over the years 2017-2018 and consisted of the reopening and renaturation of the Mardyck Canal: this allowed for a landscaping of the banks on an area of almost 5 hectares. The second phase of this project will consist of studies and work to restore the former Mardyck Canal and eco-landscape integration of Jacobsen Park. Thus, it will be realised, on nearly 4.25 hectares: — the restoration of the former Mardyck Canal – the realisation of a lagoon at the 1st pond of Jacobsen Park – ecological and landscape restoration of the banks (2nd pond) – the improvement of the ecological and landscape potential of the reedhill (3 rd pond).
