MolAI4Cryo: Modelling and Artificial Intelligence applied to Cryo-EM 3D structures to fight COVID and AMR

Since the end of 2019, coronavirus 2 infection of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-Cov-2) has spread worldwide creating an unprecedented pandemic under the name COVID-19. Although different types of vaccines currently appear to be effective on current strains of the virus, it seems essential to better understand the characteristics of RNA virus infection in order to be able to more effectively combat new mutant viral strains and possible future pandemics. This project aims in particular to acquire state-of-the-art scientific equipment (a transmission electronic cryo-microscope) to image viruses and its key components in order to highlight the biological molecular mechanisms underlying the infection. Consistent with the return to a “normal” life following this recent pandemic, this research programme will focus on proposing new antiviral pathways, particularly drugs, to continue living with this virus and its new mutants. The fundamental research data accumulated in this project will also help to better understand the effects of long-term viral infection on human cells and thus better anticipate future outbreaks. Ultimately, we hope that our results can have a strong positive impact on public health.
