The Guyanese forest is characterised by an exceptional number of tree species and associated traditional knowledge. With changing lifestyles, popular knowledge about trees is eroding in Guyana. The ONF Guyana has botanical skills within its team and wishes to enhance them, secure them (some botanists will retire soon) and make them available to the general public. This is not part of its main tasks, but the Office wishes to contribute to improving knowledge and raising Guyanese’s awareness of their heritage. Enhance the intangible natural cultural heritage of knowledge around the trees of Guyana. This type of knowledge is recognised by the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage adopted by UNESCO in 2003: the CARAPA-Guyane project proposes to gather and disseminate this knowledge through the edition of a tree guide incorporating original illustrated determination keys and educational and popularisation actions on the trees of Guyana (video, exhibition, lectures and guided tours). The guide will aggregate inventory data for 300 tree species from public institutions and research organisations: this data will be transferred to the Nature and Landscape Information System (SINP) and can be retrieved by the Amazon Biodiversity Office of Guyana (OBAG).
