The archipelago of the Salvation Islands is located off Kourou. It is composed of Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph and Île du Devil. A penitentiary centre between 1850 and 1946, it was ceded to the CNES in 1971. The Conservatoire du Littoral bought the former house of the director of the prison in 1995. The property consists of a main building and two annexes. The ensemble has been listed as Historic Monuments since 1986. The building and its annexes have been converted into a site museum for the public retracing the history of the prison. Thematic events are occasionally offered on the occasion of national or local events (Patrimony Day, Cayenne Festival, Night of Museums...) by the Agamis association, manager of the site. The buildings have deteriorated and must be restored as soon as possible for safety and a better reception to the public. The Conservatory carried out two heritage studies to identify disorders and estimate the amount of work to be undertaken.
