Regional Action Plan Milan Royal “2018/2020” phase

Royal Milan is a raptor linked to open agricultural areas where extensive polyculture and livestock activities are carried out. C is an endemic species of Europe, for which France has a particular responsibility. Indeed, the French nesting population is estimated at nearly 12 % of the world’s population! More than 5,000 individuals also winter in our territory, mainly in the Pyrenees and the Massif Central. Our country is overflew by large continental and northern populations during spring and autumn migration. The species is classified Vulnerable on the IUCN France Red List. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region hosts about 600 to 1,000 couples, one third of the French population, so it has a great responsibility for the conservation of the population of Royal Milan, distributed mainly in the Massif Central, and also to a lesser extent in the plateaus and wide valleys of the north of the Alps. The objective of this programme is to combat the main threats, with local actors (farmers, communities...), who weigh on the species and on which we can act locally: habitat degradation and scarcity of the food resource, risk of mortality; while continuing to improve knowledge and follow-up in order to improve the consideration of the species and assess the state of health of local populations.
