An integral part of the landscape, works of art of various forms and types are of paramount importance in the public road domain. Their functions may vary from crossing a watercourse to crossing a lane. The socio-economic interest of these structures depends on the importance of the area and the route where they are located. The tragedy of the 2018 collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, Italy has revived debates on the state of art works in France as well as their management by local authorities. The number of road bridges in France is estimated to be between 200000 and 250000, according to the report of the fact-finding mission on the state of bridges in France. The Department entrusted the management of its roads and road works to the joint syndicate of management, maintenance and operation of the roads of Guadeloupe (Routes de Guadeloupe). Guadeloupe and its outbuildings (Marie Galante, Saintes and Désirade) are composed of about 600 km of departmental roads. There are a total of 217 works of art (bridges). Like all islands in the archipelago of the Lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe has the particularity of being both subject to cyclones, characterised by strong winds and heavy rainfall; and earthquakes.
