The CHC has been providing and organising the network of primary care in isolated territories since 2004. The remote prevention and care centres (CDPS) of the Cayenne Hospital Centre provide access to local care for the 20 % of Guyana’s population living in remote territories in the interior of Guyana and along the cross-border rivers in Brazil and Surinam representing nearly 60000 inhabitants. The three main CDPS, are those of St Georges de l’Oyapock, Grand Santi and Maripasoula on the Maroni River are each at least 200 km from the CH of Cayenne or West Guyanese, only the first being connected by the road (2 h 30 from Cayenne). As part of the project to set up a CHU in Guyana, it was decided to transform these three centres into local hospitals. A transformation of the three health centres into local hospitals requires the implementation of important means of investment in particular from 2023.
