ERDF – GANIL – E2S3 – PLATFORM

GANIL is the largest accelerator of heavy ions in France. It is a TGIR (Very Large Research Infrastructure). It therefore occupies a prominent place in the national and international strategy of the Ministry of Research as well as the governing bodies of the GANIL: CEA and CNRS. GANIL, with its global community of 700 users, contributes significantly to the influence of research in Normandy. The current use of GANIL beams by the nuclear physics community and other science disciplines will be significantly increased with the arrival of SPIRAL2 (Second Generation Radioactive Ion Production System), with new specific programs. Since 2006, SPIRAL2 has been included in the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) which defines the European strategy for the construction of future research infrastructures, in line with the construction of the European Research Area (ERA). SPIRAL2 is a project based on a linear particle accelerator for fundamental nuclear physics studies and interdisciplinary research. The first part of SPIRAL2, called “Phase 1” is currently starting. It consists of a linear accelerator SPIRAL2-LINAC and three world-class experiment rooms SPIRAL2-NFS, SPIRAL2-S3 and SPIRAL2-DESIR, which will increase the production capacities of very high intensity ion beams and radioactive nuclei of the GANIL-SPIRAL1-SPIRAL2 assembly. SPIRAL2 will make GANIL as early as 2021, with the launch of scientific programmes, one of the world’s leading science. GANIL, with SPIRAL2, is actively involved in projects dedicated to the integration and development of nuclear physics infrastructure in Europe such as H2020 ENSAR2 and IDEAAL.
