Parents’ café

Target group: The project is aimed at parents with a migrant background who are difficult or impossible to reach through “traditional” parental involvement. Objectives: • Involvement of parents in school through increased parent participation • Creating an open relationship between school and home • Enable parents to connect with each other through the school • Support parents in promoting their children’s education Number of participants: During the project period, a total of up to 15 participants are expected to join the project. Participating schools • Community school “Am Rennsteig”, 98724 Neuhaus • Staatliche Regelschule Lichtetal, 98724 Neuhaus am Rennweg • Nordschule Steinach, State Community School, 96523 Steinach Short description for the project “Paterncafè” Duration: 01.02.2022 – 31.7.2022 Project implementation: In order to break down existing structures of the “classic parent information event”, the parents’ café is chosen at all three schools in a format that allows for an informal exchange between parents and teachers, thereby achieving, above all, a strengthening of the educational partnership. The low-threshold approach promotes a culture of dialogue at school and among parents. Focus on content: Nordschule Neuhaus & Regelschule Lichtetal Both schools face the challenge of getting in touch with parents with a migrant background and are often unable to support them with everyday and important questions concerning school organisation. At the same time, students with a migration background lack parental support structures, as there is little knowledge of the German education and training system in the parents’ home. Against this background, the parents’ café should serve as a vehicle to get in touch with the parents on the one hand and, on the other hand, to provide information on the interaction between parental home and school, such as important milestones in class levels or parental duties and (participation) rights to parents. In addition, parents should gain an insight into school learning and today’s forms of learning, as well as get to know parental support opportunities. Community school ‘Am Rennsteig’ The school is always faced with the great challenge that there is hardly any contact with the parents with a migration background and that they are little integrated into school life. In a first step, the school wants to find a simple and low-threshold approach to parenthood, in order to present itself as supporters and promoters of the children and also to lay the foundation for intercultural understanding and integration. A vehicle is required, which takes over the transport between the two systems. It is important for the school to dock in existing structures. At the end of the school year, a school festival is planned as part of a merger with the primary school. Among other things, parents with a migrant background should also be involved in the planning and design. The parents’ café is intended to form this framework in which the arrangement between parenthood and teachers is discussed, planned and prepared together.
