The project to build a large library located in the heart of the Saint Jacques district, in the city centre of Besançon, will constitute a major centre for the study, research and dissemination of books and culture. This Grande Bibliothèque will include the University Library of Letters and Human Sciences, the Pierre Bayle Municipal Media Library and the Study and Preservation Library. This unification of a university library and an agglomeration library into a single location is a first in France. In anticipation of the opening of this cultural facility scheduled for the beginning of 2027, the Greater Besançon Urban Community, the City of Besançon and the University of Franche Comté are already seeking to modernise the IT infrastructure of their libraries and digital services for readers. This modernisation involves the deployment of ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID, a state-of-the-art technical innovation that will enable users to manage their book borrowing independently via a free smartphone application. The implementation of RFID will thus make it possible to streamline the loan and return of works and free up the working time of reception staff for more qualitative missions, such as advice to readers. The installation of a robot in the Great Library will complete the system.
