The operation carried out by the Syndicat mixte de Gestion de L'eau et de l'Assainissement (Joint Water and Sanitation Management Union) is aimed at the construction of a collective sanitation system in the town centre of Petit-Canal. Indeed, there is currently no functioning collective sanitation system. This area is mainly composed of residences built before 2007, the majority of which individual sanitation facilities do not comply with current standards. In addition, some neighborhoods have failed mini-treatment stations, unable to effectively treat all the wastewater generated in the village. To comply with the European Directive on Urban Wastewater and avoid financial penalties, work is essential. This work, supervised by SMGEAG, includes the establishment of a collective sanitation system. The site for the future treatment plant is located in the western part of the commune of Petit-Canal. The treated effluents will be discharged by dispersion in a mangrove area on a plot belonging to the Conservatoire du Littoral. The latter gave a favourable opinion in principle for the installation of a 150-metre discharge line. Due to the topography, four discharge stations will be needed to carry the 15 km of wastewater networks from the collection perimeter to the future treatment plant.
