Turning Waste into Thermoplastic Materials

The region of West-North Brabant is known for one of the largest chemical industrial sites in the Netherlands. Of course, this industry provides employment for many residents in the region. Due to the growing focus on the transition to a circular economy, the fossil industry is rapidly declining, which also means employment. This also means that a considerable number of jobs will disappear in West-North Brabant. It is therefore necessary that the region prepares for the socio-economic impact of the advancing energy transition. UBQ Materials can contribute to the solution to this challenge. UBQ Materials has developed an innovative waste conversion technology that converts municipal solid waste from landfills into a sustainable alternative to oil-based plastics. This approach addresses one of the main obstacles in the transition to a circular economy by reducing resource overuse and CO2 emissions. UBQ Materials begins its global expansion in Bergen op Zoom with a state-of-the-art industrial facility and a research and development laboratory. To support the territorial Just Transition Plan of West Brabant and the RIS3 South Netherlands, UBQ Materials will contribute to the transformation from fossil to green chemistry by supporting projects and creating jobs in the region: • Enabling a reduction of 204,800 tonnes of CO2 per year after commissioning of the plant, compared to the CO2-intensive production of virgin thermoplastics and making a significant contribution to the objectives set by the North-West Brabant region. • The start-up of a fully functional demonstration plant in Bergen op Zoom with an RDF processing capacity of 105,000 tonnes per year. • Creating 140 jobs in the green chemicals and recycling sector, in support of the regional economy. • Ensuring continuous development of knowledge on the circular economy and recycling to support the transition to green chemistry.
