The world is rapidly transiting towards a more sustainable approach. To catch up with the EU ambition of CO2 neutral and circular economy by 2050, it is essential to switch from conventional chemistry to green chemistry. The current labor market and educational system do not fully meet the demands of this transition in the region. To solve this problem, we set up the FermiChem project. The goal of FermiChem is to build a co-creative training-research infrastructure in green chemistry. FermiChem will cover techniques to produce biobased chemicals as well as the downstream product formulation process with green chemistry method. As a starting point, we will use one of the modern technologies, precision fermentation, as the entry to set up the framework. The perspective of the project is to create a long-term supply scheme to support an agile and resilient labor market in green chemistry. By carrying out this project, a group of next-generation specialists will be trained in alternative chemical production and processing using fermentation-derived technologies. Ultimately, we hope to help Noord Brabant to switch from conventional chemistry to green chemistry in the way of ‘just transition’.
