The impact of the energy transition on the energy intensive industry in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Vlissingen-Oost is large – economic, social, spatial and environmental. In addition to new techniques and processes, people play a central role in this. As human capital, but also as a citizen or stakeholder. Both the demand for suitable human resources for and for social involvement in the energy transition are crucial. To meet this demand, the two largest professional educators in the region – Scalda (mbo) and HZ (hbo) together with the innovation hub Dockwize in Zeeland are setting up the Energy Campus Zeeland project. This project contributes significantly to the objectives of Track 3 of the Just Transition Fund and makes a major impact in the COROP area Zeeuws-Vlaanderen / Vlissingen-Oost. On the one hand, a more agile and resilient labour market is created because the Energy Campus responds flexibly and innovatively to the quantitative and qualitative demand for human resources from industry. On the other hand, by focusing on social inclusion: the Energy Campus actively involves people in their role as residents or stakeholders and increases involvement in, and the energy transition and the attractiveness of jobs in this area. Energy Campus is in line with the demand from this industry, works closely with this and is closely in line with other initiatives in this area. The starting point is that a future-proof labour market starts with innovative strength. The activities, processes and production within the chemical industry are undergoing a transformation. The Energy Campus will play a central role in reducing the demand for staff, attracting innovative entrepreneurs, stimulating entrepreneurship and creating social innovation around the energy transition. Technical, process-based and social innovations reduce the pressure on the labour market. In addition, the Energy Campus provides modernised educational facilities. It is precisely within the chemical industry that it is virtually impossible to see and experience practice from a learning and development objective. With this, it is important to modernize existing locations in the ZV-VO area in such a way that they simulate the practice as well as possible and make innovation possible. Within these facilities, and with practice, the Campus will function as a knowledge hub. From that knowledge hub, in the modern facilities, Lifelong Development gets content. This way, demand from the field, new lines of research and new training modules come together. Not only to train (future) workers, but also to involve citizens and stakeholders in the energy transition – social inclusion. The Energy Campus is based on collaboration. Applicants primarily respond to the demand from the industry to structurally align the supply of training with the transitions that take place. With the authorities to translate policy into action. With citizens to include them in what the energy transition entails and can mean for them. With interest groups to strengthen the social foundation and monitor the ecological ceiling. Ultimately, Energy Campus Zeeland grows into a public-private partnership, and thus the learning community that connects all parties and works on the realization of an agile and resilient labour market for the energy transition.
