Blue2Green recycling provides safe and sustainable treatment of infectious medical waste as an alternative to incineration. Raw materials are recovered from the waste and used in the circular economy. Achieved environmental gains are made transparent for healthcare institutions and hospitals. Medical waste is currently incinerated in its entirety at the Hospital Waste Incineration Plant (ZAVIN) in Dordrecht. For the time being, this is the only treatment option for medical waste in the Netherlands. The healthcare sector is responsible for approximately 8% of the total CO2 emissions in our country and 40,000 tonnes of medical waste are incinerated annually. At least 28,000 tons is suitable for recycling! Within the JTF project, a processing site is being developed and realized to decontaminate and recycle infectious medical waste on a large scale. This innovative circular process therefore provides raw materials for new products, saving primary raw materials and thus approximately 87% CO2 reduction compared to combustion.
