The purpose of this application is to develop a hydro-metallurgical process for the extraction of Vanadium and other valuable components from steel slag. There is an increasing demand for Vanadium for use in the Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB). The VRFB has 5 times more charging cycles than Lithium-ion batteries, they are safer and easier to recycle. After a lab-scale test, a pilot plant is built to process approximately 500 tons of steel slag. In addition to Vanadium, Calcium Oxide, Iron Oxide and Phosphate are recovered. This maximises the raw material efficiency of the steel production process. The project also provides the design for a commercial factory to process up to 500,000 tons of steel slag per year. A training plan is being developed to train 20 needed workers, including those with a distance to the labour market. Phoenix is a recognized learning company and offers practical learning places in this project.
