FIBERS

The Northern Netherlands is an agricultural region. Starch apples are grown on a large scale in the northern Netherlands and they play a crucial role in the economy. Starch is an important, plant-based building block of foods. For 2,200 Groningen and Drenthe arable farmers, cultivation is the most important source of income. The changes to the so-called building plan adapted for starch potato cultivation therefore have major consequences for the sector and chain. The manufacturing industry also faces challenges; Greening and sustainability is one of them. Fossils and chemicals are widely used for the processing and modification of starch. Another challenge is the transition from animal to plant proteins is an important change. And also the challenge of making nutrition a positive contribution to people's health.
