The project "Tefboerderij Dubbele Dijk" is the socio-economic implementation of the innovative coastal defence project "Dubbele Dijk" at Bierum (GN). This coastal defence project is part of the concept development and implementation for strengthening Wadden Sea dikes. The concept "Double Dike" is based on the National Delta Programme for a future and climate-resilient coastal defence. The North-Eastern Groningen region has been and is being severely affected economically and socially by the effects of halting gas extraction and the effects of climate change, including sea level rise and increasing salinisation. As a result, agricultural land, an important economic carrier of Groningen, will become less or no longer suitable for today's high-quality production.
