Circular plastics for biomedical research and diagnostics

The medical sector wants and needs to become more sustainable. The industry uses hundreds of billions of pieces of laboratory products made from fossil-based, non-recyclable plastics, mostly polystyrene-based. A promising alternative to polystyrene (PS) are polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). PHAs are a collective term for a group of biobased and biodegradable polyesters produced by microorganisms from organic waste streams. This ERDF project revolves around the development of biobased and circular PHA-based petri dishes & 96-wells micro titre plates. For the market uptake and application of PHA cell culture trays, it is important that the PHA properties match those of conventional PS cell culture trays. This allows the right quality in terms of reliability to be delivered. To do this, the surface properties of PS must be examined.
