The project focuses on an innovative process for the production of seaweed products on land. This project focuses on cultivation on land rather than at sea, because the production process on land is much more controllable, a higher yield per hectare can be achieved and the seaweed produced is of higher quality. This is necessary to close the chain and make seaweed a success as a protein source of the future. The main objective of the project is to test and validate an innovative tank concept in a greenhouse with salt groundwater and to develop innovative products based on the seaweed grown in the cultivation tank. To achieve this goal, SMEs Seaweedland, DL Plastics and Hortimare, together with knowledge institutions Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, CEW and large company Seaweed Food Solutions (part of Royal Smilde) and Smilde Bakery (potential customer) are developing the seaweed products of the future.
