The CompoFoil; ‘Enhancing sustainability by scaling up wind propulsion in maritime transport’ Wind propulsion on seagoing vessels is now the fastest applicable solution contributing to low-emission sailing. Due to the high start-up costs when using fiber-reinforced composites, Econowind has previously focused on the manufacture of metal VentoFoils. The current metal sails are heavy and not suitable for large numbers. This has a negative impact on the payback period for shipowners. The consortium wants to replace the current metal variant with a functionally at least equivalent alternative based on fibre-reinforced composites. These materials are expected to offer the possibility to produce large numbers of lighter wings with a good mould at a lower cost. The CompoFoil partnership will validate this composite wing technology. In the event of a positive result, the CompoFoil will serve the global market for 30,000 seagoing vessels suitable for the installation of a CompoFoil.share on FacebookTwitterLinkedinEmailreport an issue
