Living Lab Iron Fuel Technology

Given the high energy demand, the large-scale use of fossil fuels and therefore the large share of total CO2 emissions, making energy-intensive industries more sustainable is crucial for accelerating the energy transition. With Iron Fuel TechnologyTM, the consortium offers a sustainable, low-CO2 and low-NOx, safe and circular alternative to the use of fossil fuels for high-temperature heat generation. The basis of Iron Fuel TechnologyTM is the rusting and derusting of iron fuel (iron in powder form), which allows energy to be released and stored, similar to a rechargeable battery. The aim of this project is to demonstrate the operation of Iron Fuel TechnologyTM in an operational environment. In the living lab, the entire value chain is connected to create synergies, increase the impact of the technology and ensure and accelerate its commercial rollout. The result is a saving of 1,384 tonnes of CO2 and 754 tonnes of NOx.
