The European Commission will implement the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) by the end of 2023 to regulate and introduce various mandatory circularity requirements for plastic packaging. In the case of flexible packaging in particular, there is a large operational gap between the current situation and the objectives set by the Regulation. 3 Dutch companies based in the south of the Netherlands, together with two Dutch knowledge institutions, are carrying out this innovation project CIFLEX to develop their products to the extent that they meet at least the standards laid down in the regulation and are even expected to exceed them. The knowledge and experience generated in this project will be processed into design guidelines to comprehensively support the plastic packaging industry in achieving the circular objective of regulation with positive economic performance to demonstrate the feasibility of the circular economy in the packaging industry.
