The partners in this project are developing a biobased biodegradable alternative to EPS (spray foam) packaging materials based on starch foam. With a new process technology, the goal is to develop a packaging material for products heavier than 5 kilos that, like paper, is recyclable but also compostable. In addition to a cardboard box, filling pieces and corner pieces based on EPS are also used for packaging heavy products such as heating and ventilation devices, furniture and white and brown goods. There is an increasing need for more environmentally friendly alternatives in the market. On the one hand because there are legal restrictions, on the other hand because companies and consumers no longer want to receive plastic and Styrofoam. The material to be developed should have similar properties of EPS in terms of density, resilience, tensile and flexural strength, but with a low carbon footprint.
