Forests and the forest bioeconomy are a designated area of strength in the regions' smart specialisation strategies. Today, the raw material is mainly processed by larger players. We see the potential for SMEs to use the forest for more purposes than for traditional large-scale forestry. This contributes to increased breeding rates and rural development in the counties, as well as a better utilization of the forest's various values The study will map existing and potential multi-use companies in Västernorrland and Jämtland/Härjedalen. We will also, in collaboration with existing multi-use companies and interest groups, identify the needs and conflicts of objectives that prevent further development of multi-use companies and how this can be realized through an implementation project. Since forest activities in many cases extend across county boundaries, this preliminary study is a collaboration between the regional forest programmes in the four northernmost counties.
