This research project will contribute to creating improved conditions for the transition to climate-neutral steel production in the Norrbotten region. The project will, among other things, study how hydrogen affects important aspects of the process metallurgical part of steel production as well as the qualities and mechanical properties of steel products. In addition, challenges related to the increasing use of scrap as a raw material will be investigated. The project aims to optimize individual sub-processes in steel production as well as the performance of future industrial ecosystems. The research is divided into three work packages: System design, Process metallurgy for fossil-free steels and Processing and heat treatment of fossil-free steels. The activities include both modelling and experimental work. The work will be carried out through a close collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, the Royal Institute of Technology and, where appropriate, also at pilot facilities of partners.
