Electrification of fossil energy sources

The metal industry in Västerbotten consists mainly of mines and smelters. The dominant player is Boliden AB, which operates the mines and the Rönnskär smelter. The target group for the project is Boliden Rönnskär, which is the largest emission point in the Västerbotten metal industry and is in tenth place on the EU/ETS list for Sweden. The goal of the Electrification of Fossil Energy Source project is to supply electric boiler capacity with potential energy storage to cover Boliden Rönnskär's oil needs for auxiliary steam. This is expected to result in reduced emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), more efficient production and improved efficiency in the production of steam and heat. The power targets are to reduce dependence on fossil-based energy by about 15 - 25 GWh and then reduce emissions in terms of both CO2 and NOx.
