Ant restoration in Norrbotten County The project Ant Restoration in Norrbotten County "MyreN" restores at least 1000 hectares of ditched ants hydrology as an important part of society's climate adaptation. Of the county's approximately 2 million hectares of wetlands, large parts are affected by extensive land drainage that has taken place primarily with the aim of increasing forest production. With the help of excavators, the project fills and plugs ditches on priority bogs and monitors the effects of rewetting. The ability of wetlands to even out water flows in the landscape is restored and contributes to a reduced risk of harmful social consequences caused by floods, droughts and forest fires that are expected to become more common with climate change. The restored marshes also provide the valuable ecosystem services of water purification and reduced emissions of carbon dioxide that drained wetlands leak out. Restoration increases the biodiversity of mires and the resilience of the entire ecosystem to the disturbances of climate change and our unique northern nature is particularly vulnerable to.share on FacebookTwitterLinkedinEmailreport an issue
