Young people have different opportunities to make active upper secondary school choices based on knowledge of the labour market and their own personal interests and motivations. Many young people instead choose based on unconscious factors such as socio-economic heritage, segregation and gender roles, while the lack of labour market knowledge means that many lack an understanding of the consequences that high school choice leads to. By choosing education based on norms and expectations, the risk of young people not completing their upper secondary education increases, which further leads to a continued segregated labour market, both socioeconomically and gender-related. In order to break socio-economic inheritance, segregation and gender-normative choices, early intervention is needed to enable young people to acquire knowledge of the labour market and to explore and understand their personal interests and driving forces. In the project, Fryshuset together with CIS Kalmar AB will work to improve the transition from primary school to upper secondary school through continuous reflective conversations, norm-critical and self-reinforcing exercises and workshops that will contribute to more equal conditions for young people to make informed upper secondary school choices based on knowledge of themselves, their driving forces and interests, and knowledge of the labour market. In the long run, the aim is for more young people to complete their upper secondary education and, in the long term, increase the conditions for all young people to establish a sustainable working life that is in line with their own preferences, interests and needs.
