Care Competence for Integration

Since February 2022, 59,813 people from Ukraine have sought protection in Sweden and are covered by the Mass Refugee Directive. In 2023, 33 643 of these persons received extended protection. A significant proportion of these people have a qualified healthcare education that is in high demand in the Swedish healthcare system. Doctors from Ukraine are the group of refugees with the highest tertiary education from their home country. This, combined with the fact that they have now stayed for a period in Sweden, is well placed to meet the formal requirements for obtaining a Swedish medical license. Passing the national proficiency test is a requirement to be able to work as a doctor in Sweden. Since spring 2022, Sophiahemmet has carried out various operations for Ukrainian doctors and nurses who arrived after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In total, almost 140 doctors, nurses and people with other healthcare experience from Ukraine have participated in our project Care Integration within the framework of ESF Care. The wishes and needs that have emerged repeatedly from the participants are that they need extensive knowledge of professional Swedish and support to learn the specific skills required to pass the mandatory, national knowledge test in order to apply for Swedish medical license. With this application, we intend to conduct a tailor-made training that prepares Ukrainian doctors, who are in Sweden under the Mass Refuge Directive, to pass the national knowledge test to work as a doctor in Sweden. To implement a tailor-made training programme for 40 participants (doctors from Ukraine) aimed at enabling participants to complete and pass the national proficiency test for doctors trained outside the EU/EEA after the training. The overall aim of this action is to improve the integration process for these people and to shorten the time to start working as a doctor in the Swedish healthcare system. Selected methods and approaches Our intervention consists of three main activities: 1. Vocational English for Doctors 2. Preparatory course for the theoretical part of the knowledge test for doctors trained outside the EU/EEA, 7.5 credits 3. Our target group (40 Ukrainian doctors living in Sweden under the Mass Refugee Directive) will be recruited via the network Sophiahemmet has built up since spring 2022. Sophiahemmet has a solid experience of conducting introductory training courses for healthcare professionals. Since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, closer people with healthcare education have completed our courses based on modern digital higher education pedagogy and participated in our physical networking meetings with participants, employers and representatives from the surrounding society. Based on the above, we have built a stable network of healthcare professionals from Ukraine.
