Good care of the elderly, which is of high quality and safety, requires that the staff of the elderly care services have the necessary skills in the work. A challenge for elderly care today is a lack of staff with the right training and sufficient knowledge of the Swedish language. New national requirements for protected professional titles for assistant nurses as well as increased complexity of activities further accelerate this. Managers' prerequisites for supporting employees' language development and competence development in general also need to be strengthened. Many people working in elderly care are foreign-born, often women, who need better opportunities for skills development. Those who lack the right education often have a weak labour market position. The project Competence Development in Elderly Care contributes to assistant nurses and care assistants in elderly care gaining skills in language and profession and thus a stronger position in the labour market. The project will develop a work-oriented and flexible training model that meets the needs of employees for training. The core of the project is integrated language and vocational education. Employee managers will also be involved to ensure that employees receive the right support and opportunities for skills development. The overall objective is to reduce the mismatch between employers' need for skills and the skills of existing staff, i.e. an improved supply of skills.
