Competence arena Piteå-Älvsbyn

The green business transition that has accelerated with two years of pandemic has put northern Sweden and especially Norrbotten on the map. There are great job opportunities here when virtually all industries demand more and more. At the same time, the region reflects low unemployment and a low population growth, which means that local and regional employers have a very difficult time recruiting. Several employers see upper secondary school as the primary labour supply, while the municipalities of Piteå and Älvsbyn together train just over 1,700 pupils under the auspices of adult education. Education in everything from SFI to university of applied sciences. Common to the students is the experience of a distanced working life that lacks knowledge of competences and job opportunities. Distancing has the effect of impairing the reception capacity of both foreign-born persons at SFI, as well as vocational adult pupils without an employer network. Kompetensarena Piteå-Älvsbyn is a regional collaboration project whose purpose is to highlight and create the right business conditions for the recipients - pupils and other jobseekers. The project involves the municipalities' adult education, business departments, Entrepreneurs Piteå, trade developers Älvsbyn and IUC. Kompetensarena Piteå-Älvsbyn uses Service Design as a method to identify general and specific business needs where municipalities can support, inspire, involve and educate. Competence arena Piteå-Älvsbyn is a purely structural development project with employers as a target group and will lay the foundation for improved recipient capacity of the region's existing workforce. The project will serve as a start-up for more local and regional start-ups, such as learning centres. Without strong structures on the issue of skills supply, the green transition risks losing momentum, which would mean impaired local and regional growth in Norrbotten.
