Lowering thresholds to higher education through SI

Through the project "Reduced thresholds to higher education through SI" people belonging to groups that are underrepresented in Swedish higher education can be inspired to start higher studies. SI stands for Collaborative Learning. The fact that young people are inspired to further studies and strengthen their school results also contributes to a long-term supply of skills in Skåne. Skills supply is part of Region Skåne's regional development work. For Malmö University, the project will be an important piece of the puzzle in their work with widening recruitment. The SI leaders from Malmö University will be a way to reach out to prospective students through schools and principals. In this way, young people who, for example, come from study-above homes can get a more simplistic picture of higher education, which it can be difficult for the university to do on its own. The project aims to counter early school leaving, increase the throughput of challenging high school courses, improve school outcomes and stimulate skills such as creative thinking and problem-solving. All students in the selected courses will be offered SI-passports but mainly it is the men's throughput that is low. The project will only offer SI that turns from the university to upper secondary schools. The thresholds between education and training systems need to be lowered so that more people can overcome them. Another purpose is to inspire career choices where there is a great need for trained staff. Another aim of the project is to broaden the recruitment of students to universities and colleges. It also aims to improve collaboration between principals/upper secondary schools and Malmö University. The project intends to launch a new regional SI platform called "Reduced Thresholds to Higher Education through SI". The strengths of the SI method are many and it is an activity that seems easy to understand and embrace for all actors involved. A major strength is the recruitment of SI leaders at the university. Positive effects of the previous SI platform are that participating students experience, for example, that they are more motivated to complete their studies (80%), they are more motivated to apply for higher education (67%), they have gained a deeper understanding of course content (93%) and have improved their results on the courses (78%). Participating educational actors such as principals and teachers see the benefit of having a SI-activities and are in favour of participating. According to a three-year plan, the project will work in schools with a need for increased throughput and extra support, and will be an activity in broad cooperation with the county's actors, both public and private. Initially, the project is aimed at some previously affiliated schools with the aim of increasing the number of participating principals and schools during the first year of the project. New schools will be selected in consultation with the principals. In order for the project to be sustainable over time, account needs to be taken of students' commuting time to the participating schools. In this project description, the aim is to bring funding closer to the principals/schools. It is important that funding is stabilised to ensure that work on the SI method can be sustainable in the long term after the project form has been phased out. To achieve this, the project needs to develop collaboration structures between Malmö University and the school units as well as the administrative level of the principals.
