The project is a collaboration between Akademi Norr and the Association of Local Authorities in Lapland. The municipalities affected and spending time in the project are Arjeplog, Arvidsjaur, Dorotea, Gällivare, Jokkmokk, Kiruna, Kramfors, Pajala, Lycksele, Norsjö, Sollefteå, Sorsele, Storuman, Strömsund, Vilhelmina, Åsele and Skellefteå. The project has close cooperation with Luleå University of Technology, Umeå University, Mid Sweden University, Entrepreneurs in Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Jämtland, Region Västerbotten Unit for Education and Knowledge Development, Norrbotten municipalities, Vinnova, various polytechnic actors such as Lernia, FEI, Medlearn and others. The project is broadly based. Since mid-2020, the cooperating municipalities have all been working towards the long-term goal of achieving a coordinated effort to increase the proportion of highly educated people in the region. Regardless of whether it concerns Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland or Jämtland, access to higher education varies within the counties and the level of education depends largely on where in each county you live. Not everyone has the same opportunities for lifelong learning. The aim of the project is to strengthen the operational capacity to coordinate efforts on higher education among geography actors. The overall goal is to give the men and women living in our sparsely populated areas better opportunities to take part in higher education, to give our municipalities and companies better opportunities to recruit trained staff and thus reduce the consequences on the labour market caused by sparse geography. We expect to see a certain difference already during the project period in the form of More men and women living in our geography choose to study at a post-secondary level. The activities are carried out in five different work packages and include, among other things, joint conferences, development of models for needs mapping and work-based training, development of courses adapted to the conditions of sparse geography, strengthened exchange of experiences nationally and internationally, visibility of access to and supply of higher education in the geographical area, and strengthened collaboration with companies, polytechnic actors and Learning Centres.
