Optical Quantum Technologies

We are planning to develop optical quantum signal processing technologies. Many protocols in science and engineering rely on the sequential synthesis of an input signal, modifying it by interacting with the environment in a deliberate (e.g. sensors) or undesirable (e.g. communication) way and analyzing the output signal to extract information. Standard approaches work well for classical signals, e.g. well-defined complex runs defined as a function of position or time, and noise is treated as an addition, leading to the finalisation of the shot noise limit. In contrast, quantum signal processing describes a signal as a multimode quantum state, e.g. of an electromagnetic field in an appropriate frequency band. This opens up a wide spectrum of new approaches to signal synthesis, e.g. the use of non-classical light states, signal manipulation through, among others, the engineering of interaction with the subject and signal analysis through careful detection design maximizing the amount of information obtained. Quantum optical technologies provide a wide range of signal processing tools, such as shifting frequencies without or with minimal modification of the quantum statistical properties of the signal, performing selective operations in mode that facilitate noise reduction, or using feedback to amplify useful interactions derived from the measured quantity. A unified quantum signal processing approach will be applied to various problems in communication, detection, imaging, spectroscopy, etc. In parallel, experimental tools for quantum signal processing based on memory, transducers and quantum interfaces will be developed. The project will focus on developing practical applications.
