Electrically powered compact single photon sources operating at room temperature

The project aims to develop a new type of single photon source, operating at room temperature and electrically excited, with the potential for both scientific research and quantum telecommunications applications, in particular quantum key transmission. Currently available commercial sources of single photons are mainly based on parametric conversion. They are limited by the lack of on-demand emission possibilities, as well as the relatively low efficiency and the need for external laser stimulation, which prevents miniaturisation and increases energy demand. The single-photon source proposed in this project will allow the device to be reduced to millimetre sizes by avoiding the use of external pumping lasers or cryostats. The device will emit single photons ‘on demand’ and allow effective coupling with external optical systems. The groundbreaking properties of this device will be ensured by a hybrid structure in which a nitride laser or resonant diode is integrated into a photonic structure in which a layer of hBN with quantum emitters is placed. Maximum photon extraction will be achieved thanks to the Purcell effect, which in the optimal case will allow to obtain the indistinguishability of emitted photons. The project is based on the achievements and experience of the team that developed the first prototype hybrid sources of single photons based on dichalcogenes of transition metals and boron nitride. The team has experience in working with hybrid structures of nitrogen diodes and exfoliated semiconductors and advanced methods of designing photonic structures. ‘Single photon hybrid light emitting diode and method of producing a single photon hybrid light emitting diode’ (EP4239694).
