Protection of species and natural habitats in areas administered by the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia

The aim of the project is to carry out conservation and monitoring activities to maintain or restore the favourable conservation status of natural habitats and species of plants and animals, including birds, which are the subject of protection of Natura 2000 areas under the supervision of the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia and within its competence. The implementation of the indicated conservation measures will make it possible to maintain and even improve the state of natural resources and reduce the reduction of biodiversity in Natura 2000 areas. Actions will cover those areas for which: - the Regulation of the Minister for Climate and the Environment on the establishment of a protection plan for the Vistula Lagoon and Vistula Spit PLH280007 and the Vistula Lagoon PLB280010 has been issued, - the draft protection plan for the Natura 2000 site Cliffs and Orlowa Stone Reefs PLH220105 and Ostoja w Ujście Wisły PLH220044 is being processed at the Ministry of Climate and the Environment. The planned date for approval of the plans is estimated for 2024-2025. - an order of the Regional Director for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk has been issued on the protection task plans (PZO) for the following areas: Białogóra PLH220003 and Mierzeja Sarbska PLH220018, where the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia was indicated as the body responsible for the implementation of individual tasks. Actions are planned in the above-mentioned areas, as indicated in Annex 6 to the Conservation Plan: ‘Protective measures for the maintenance or restoration of the favourable conservation status of the site’ or in the annex to the PZO ‘Protective measures with an indication of the entities responsible for their implementation and the areas of their implementation’. The proposed actions are a response to those identified in the areas of threat to objects of protection and were consulted at meetings attended by institutions and persons interested in the area. Therefore, their implementation should be accepted by local communities and contribute to the effective implementation of the developed provisions, so that conservation activities dedicated to individual species and natural habitats become a tool and a means to effectively implement the protection of a given area and the conservation of its natural resources. The actions planned in the project are in line with the document entitled Priority Action Framework (PAF) for the Natura 2000 network in Poland for the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027. These assumptions were the basis and starting point for defining further priority actions necessary for the protection of Natura 2000 sites within the available national and EU funds in the financial perspective until 2027. The implementation of the actions will also contribute to better recognition of the population size of the species in the area, which will have an impact on the matching of appropriate conservation methods. Currently, there are only residual and very often accidental information about such species as ciosa, parposz or seaminóg. Without a thorough identification of the actual state of the ascending populations in Natura 2000 areas supervised by the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia, there is no chance of their full protection. The conducted research in the field of monitoring the bycatch of birds in fishing nets in the Vistula Lagoon will provide information on the scale of the phenomenon itself and will enable the introduction of actions to minimize the mortality of individual species. The promotions carried out for the protection of individual species will increase knowledge about the natural richness of the requested areas, which will directly contribute to the protection of individual species of birds, plants and habitats. At the same time, it will increase the level of involvement of local societies in nature conservation activities. Protection of dune habitats will be carried out partly by the own forces of the Maritime Office in Gdynia using the equipment purchased in the project.
