Restoring the value of the 17th-century Orphanage in Gdańsk with the preservation and reconstruction of the monument and the adaptation of the buildings and the site of the former institution to new functions – culture and tourism

The applicant for the project in question is a local government unit, the Municipality of the City of Gdańsk. The effect of the project, i.e. After completion of the investment works, the Orphanage Team will be made available to the local government cultural institution, i.e. Gdańsk City Gallery. The subject of the Project is to restore the value of the buildings of the former Orphanage Complex, which assumes conservation works, restoration works and construction works as well as land development. As part of the implementation of the Project, a House of Literature will be created, which will serve as a cultural center: exhibition, educational, archival, commercial, residential and cultural activities will be carried out there. The scope of the Project was divided by the Applicant into four stages (I, II, III and IV), the first two of which have already been started. The contract, the subject of which is the execution of the first stage of construction works as part of the task entitled: The ‘Restore value to the 17th-century Orphanage in Gdańsk with the preservation and reconstruction of the monument and the adaptation of the buildings and the site of the former institution to new functions – culture and tourism’ was signed with the contractor on 6 July 2022. The contract, the subject of which is the execution of the second stage of construction works as part of the task entitled: The ‘Restore value to the 17th-century Orphanage in Gdańsk with the preservation and reconstruction of the monument and the adaptation of the buildings and the site of the former institution to new functions – culture and tourism’ was signed with the contractor on 13 January 2023. The remaining scope of the study, including stages III and IV, is planned to be implemented by the end of 2026. The decision approving the construction project and granting the Development Directorate of the City of Gdańsk a building permit was issued on 22 July 2021 and concerns construction works related to the Daniel Chodowiecki/Gunter Grass House - restoring the value of the former Orphanage Team with adaptation to new functions - culture and tourism. On 13 March 2020, DRMG submitted an application for a permit to be issued by the PCI for conservation and construction works for the reconstruction of the complex of the former orphanage and its surroundings, and the relevant permit was issued. The subject of the project entitled ‘Restoring the value of the 17th-century Gdańsk Orphanage with the preservation and reconstruction of the monument and the adaptation of the buildings and grounds of the former institution to new functions – culture and tourism’ is to protect against degradation and make one of the most valuable monuments of the old town of Gdańsk, which is a continuation of the historic downtown of Gdańsk, accessible to residents, creators and tourists through the creation of a new cultural institution. The tasks covered by the Project consist in protecting buildings against progressive corrosion, and then adapting the interior to the function of cultural activity with the consent and close supervision of the State Provincial Conservator of Monuments. The buildings that are the subject of the Project are in poor technical condition and many of their structural elements need to be strengthened in terms of adaptation to modern building standards. Buildings require the necessary, building rescue measures to preserve its most valuable, historic structure as much as possible. The main problem that will be solved as a result of the project is the untapped potential of the historic buildings of the former Orphanage Complex in building an attractive offer built taking into account the needs of society. The main objective of the project is to strengthen the impact of cultural heritage on the development of the attractiveness of the area, taking into account the needs of society. Information and promotion activities are planned, including: comprehensive visual identification campaign, ATL information campaign in local media, nationwide ATL information campaign, Project website, PR activities, ephemeral prints and others.
