We are changing the climate with Szczuczyn - STAGE 1

The main objective of the Project is to support the sustainable development of water through the construction of a retention reservoir with accompanying infrastructure in the Vistula river valley in the City of Szczuczyn by 10.2026. The investment will also help to achieve the following specific objectives: - reducing the risk of flooding, - ensuring access to water during periods of drought, - improving air quality, - regulating atmospheric temperature, - introducing an element of sound attenuation, - reducing the thermal island effect, - preserving biodiversity in the city, - improving the attractiveness of the city, - increasing public awareness in the field of environmental protection and biodiversity This project consists of 4 tasks, i.e.: 1. Construction of a water reservoir in the town of Szczuczyn using the existing building on the river Wissa, 2. Acting as a supervisory officer, 3. Making plantings next to the reservoir on plot 565/8 in Szczuczyn, 4. Implementation of educational activities in the field of ecology for residents of the Szczuczyn commune. The implementation of the above-mentioned scope of activities will respond to the following leading and identified problems/needs: - Climate change: The water reservoir can be used to collect water during periods of heavy rainfall, which allows for controlled use during drought. The reservoir will also allow for better control of water flow, which in turn can reduce the risk of flooding in areas lower on the river. Creation of plantings, on the other hand, will allow to provide shade and lower the air temperature during hot weather; improve the microclimate; diffuse sound waves, and thus reduce the intensity of noise; increase the level of aesthetics in the urban space. - Low level of environmental awareness: Currently, there is no place in the Szczuczyn Commune where you can get to know its rich natural environment "live" and in an attractive way assimilate knowledge about the possibilities and the need to protect it. - abandonment of the previous care of the area: It should be taken into account that the natural value of land is largely determined by the continuity of use of its surface. However, the ecosystem formed as a result of intensive use is currently disappearing in many areas. Abandonment of care treatments affects the slow change of the existing ecosystem, which threatens the current biodiversity. - meeting needs: During periods of low flow, the water body can regulate the amount of water in the river, ensuring its continuity for river ecosystems and water users. The construction of the reservoir will make it possible to store rainwater, control drains, introduce resistance to flowing water, which will slow down its flow, slow down the erosion of the river banks, reduce the risk of flooding of riverside areas. The reservoir would be a strategic reservoir that could be used in crisis situations, e.g. ensuring water access during periods of drought. Through appropriate design and management, the reservoir can become a habitat for many species of plants and animals, contributing to the protection of biodiversity.
