On the Sails of Knowledge for Key Competences

The aim of the project is to improve the quality of educational services aimed at shaping mathematical and natural sciences, technology and engineering competences, multilingualism competences as well as social competences among 192 (including 98K) students of nine primary schools of the Commune of Kościerzyna in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, taking into account the coastal (surface) location and natural values of Kashubia and preparing students for better results of external exams, taking up education at further stages of education. The commune of Kościerzyna has been among the bodies running primary schools for years, whose results of external exams are below the provincial average. More than half of the schools in accordance with Annex 5 to the Rules on the selection of projects (6 out of 9 – Kaliska, Skorzewo, W. Podleś, Wąglikowice, Łubiana, W. Klincz) are schools with results of external examinations below average. In the school year. 2020/2021, the average result in GK-na from the mathematics exam was 43% and in the Pomeranian Voivodeship 45%, while in 2021/2022 GK-na 49% and W.P. 56%. In schools not indicated in Annex 5, the results are also below the municipal and national average. In 2022, Korn scored 39% in mathematics, 49% in the municipality and 55% in the country. In 2021, in Nowy Klincz, the result of math exams was 43%, the commune 43%, and the country 47%. In 2022, in Niedamów, the result of math exams was 42%, the commune 49%, and the country 55%. Students in all schools of the K-na Commune have problems with shaping competences, including maths and multilingualism, which consequently affects the choice of secondary school (too few points for the selected profile) and further professional life. Disparities are visible in all primary schools, which is why the offer of support is addressed to students of all primary schools for which the governing body is the Kościerzyna Commune (according to the Diagnosis adopted by Order No 97/2023 of the Mayor of the Kościerzyna Commune of 19 September 2023 on: Diagnosis of development needs and planned support for schools of the Commune of Kościerzyna) and is based on the development of key competences (KK), which are to raise the knowledge and KK of students necessary on the labour market. These activities will be closely linked to the improvement of teachers in the context of innovative teaching methods and the use of knowledge and skills related to maritime and sailing education. Participants will benefit from several forms of support. The classes take into account the formation of many KKs at the same time and will use methods and tools based on maritime and sailing traditions. Classes will take the form of classes using the educational project method and extracurricular activities using water and sailing infrastructure. Navigation classes will combine knowledge from geography and mathematics, using knowledge from biology to study water, learn about flora and fauna ‘live’, which will directly improve mathematical and natural skills, and the awakening of technology and engineering will take place during practical classes, e.g. boatbuilding classes and learning knots and plexuses. English sailing nomenclature will be used during English classes. Classes will teach children to cooperate by raising their social competences, which were disturbed during the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Activities in the field of career counseling will be aimed not only at promoting professions related to the seaside location of the region, but also at shaping social competences. The Lead Partner is the Commune of Kościerzyna, and the implementer is the Education Department of the Commune of Kościerzyna. The project provides for extending the offer of classes using the potential of the NGO UKS Wodniacy Garczyn in the partnership formula. The needs for the digitalisation of schools were confirmed by a self-assessment study carried out in each school using the SELFIE tool.
