Development of the educational, cultural and exhibition offer in Sopot by adapting the space of the Forest Opera and the Museum of Sopot to integrate and strengthen local identity

The project, implemented by the City of Sopot in cooperation with the Baltic Artistic Agency – BART and the Sopot Museum, responds to the needs of residents building their regional identity based on the musical heritage of the Forest Opera, including the cultural and inspiring events taking place here. The result of research and analysis resulting from surveys, demand analysis and consultations, is a modern exhibition tailored to the needs of various groups of recipients dedicated to a unique place and its over a hundred-year history, together with an extensive educational and cultural program. It is expected that the project will contribute to strengthening the pride of belonging to the region in the inhabitants, sensitivity to the impact of culture on the social development of Sopot citizens, and, in a measurable way, to an increase in the number of visitors to the Forest Opera, including the new exhibition and the Sopot Museum. The scope of the project is the creation of a modern permanent exhibition in a new building at the Forest Opera, designed in a way that combines traditional exhibition techniques, stage design and artistic installations with interactive form and multimedia, taking into account the uniqueness of the place and its natural environment, as well as the principles of architectural, digital and information accessibility. The exhibition will popularize knowledge about the city, music, sound and provide an attractive and strengthening intergenerational entertainment. The partial renovation of the historic seat of the Sopot Museum and the digitization of its resources will develop the exhibition function of the institution and will build a platform for the development of cooperation with another urban cultural institution, strengthening the educational and tourist potential of both places. Importantly, the execution of professional, high-quality scans and 3D models will ensure the protection of valuable collections that will also be used at the exhibition at the Forest Opera and will enable their wider dissemination. In addition, making 3D models and a virtual version of a walk through the historical interiors and garden will increase the attractiveness of the Museum for visitors and improve the recognition of the place on the map of the province. The complexity of the project will ensure a combination of investment activities consisting in the creation of new exhibition spaces, presenting the resources of the Museum of Sopot and preserving the valuable heritage of the Forest Opera, with cultural education activities that result from the need of the local community to supplement the program offered by cultural centers. Interinstitutional cooperation will contribute to the dissemination of good practices in the joint care and dissemination of Sopot's intangible assets valuable for the region and the local community in the field of musical activities. Thanks to the creation of the exhibition and new educational and cultural activities, the quality of the cultural offer will be improved, documenting the value of the Forest Opera, which is crucial for the identity of the local community, both as a historical object uniquely located in a green environment, and as a place of events that often constituted a leaven for pioneering activities in the sphere of both music and mentality. Its accessibility and a diverse program of educational activities and cultural activities will create a space for the integration of recipients of various age groups and nationalities, regardless of their degree of fitness. An additional value of the project is the fact that the project activities have been interlinked with other Sopot projects in the area of active social inclusion by increasing participation in the culture of socially excluded people, including their employment and volunteering. What is more, the Applicant designs above-standard solutions that will improve accessibility for people with special needs, aesthetics, reduction of energy intensity and quality and functionality of the technologies used. Due to its objectives and scope, the project fits into the first type of project and horizontal principles, DNSH and the New European Bauhas concept.
