The Region of Western Macedonia together with six municipalities of the area (Argos Orestikou, Kozani, Kastoria, Florina, Eordaia, Kastoria, Grevena), join efforts to launch a programme of sustainable investments, that will contribute to meeting the development needs of the region in its transition away from carbon intensive activities, arising from the climate neutrality objective, as described in the Territorial Just Transition Plan of Western Macedonia. The investment programme comprises of 5 different areas of investments: from energy efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) integration measures aimed at upgrading buildings and street lighting facilities, to urban renewal and regeneration and social infrastructure development. Total primary energy savings are expected to be 30.3 MWh/year, expected CO2 emission reduction is 8.7 ktnCO2e/year, expected people reached are approx. 150 000 and at least 200 jobs are expected to be created. The grant of EUR 14.5 million complements a loan of EUR 58.1 million awarded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), bringing the total budget for the project to EUR 80.7 million.
