Aix-Marseille-Provence Métropole has launched an investment programme in 2021. The funding package comprises a €100 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) complemented by a €15 million grant from the European Commission. This investment programme includes the extension by 6.2 km of the north-south tramway line of Marseille, the construction of a storage and maintenance site and technical buildings for rolling stock and landscape works around the infrastructure and the new tramway stations. The ETNS1 project will extend the tramway line from Arenc station to Capitaine Gèze station (Northern part) and from Castellane station to La Gaye station. It corresponds to the first phase of a broader project to extend the tramway line by 18.3 km. The project, as described in the French Territorial Just Transition Plan for Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, will contribute to support changes towards more sustainable mobility, improve accessibility to the public transport network, develop active mobility with the objective to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to the achievement of the EU Green Deal carbon neutrality objective by 2050. These investments are expected to improve the performance and quality of the tram network, strengthen the quality and diversity of public transport provision in the area, offering an alternative to private cars, encourage soft mobility and behavioral changes for the local and regional citizens towards more sustainable urban mobility. The new infrastructure should improve the efficiency of the transport network. It is expected to bring benefits in terms of time savings, reduced road congestion and improved accessibility in Marseille. The project is also expected to reduce GHG emissions (by approximately 16000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents annually) and to create around 75 jobs. An increase in share of public transportation users of 37 % by 2030 is also expected. The project will contribute to decrease the modal share of individual vehicles. In total, around 93 500 people/users are expected to be positively impacted by a better offer of more efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly transport services.
