The aim of the project is to promote the development of the public outdoor space of Old Riga as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in order to ensure the improvement of the quality of pedestrian infrastructure and accessibility of the environment for diverse user groups, access to cultural and tourism services, and increase the socio-economic potential, while promoting the innovative use of sustainable resources, thus improving the quality of life of the urban environment and inhabitants and strengthening the local community. By developing the public outdoor infrastructure of Old Riga and the accessibility of the environment, the following activities included in the project will be implemented: reconstruction of the street surface of Vaļņu Street and its connections, development of the infrastructure necessary for pedestrian movement, observing the principles of universal design, ensuring accessibility and access to the public outdoor space, promoting a safe, clearly separated and orderly environment, which will promote safe movement of different population groups, as well as opportunities to use the public outdoor space for persons with various types of functional disorders, including the mobility possibilities of different age groups. The accessibility of the environment will be ensured by choosing modern, high-quality stone/concrete paving, in combination with historical solutions;Development of street improvement, including signage, micromobility and use of cycling equipment, promoting social dynamics, making Vaļņu Street an attractive space not only for tourists, but also for local residents, thus strengthening the communities of local residents;Development of green infrastructure in the territory, ensuring a pleasant and environmentally friendly environment, planned increase of maximum density of green infrastructure, using modern technology solutions and increasing the number of greenery (mainly in containers);Installation of lighting is necessary for the improvement and safety of the project territory, it will promote safe stay of different population groups ensuring visual accessibility, orientation, safety and attractiveness in evening hours;Reconstruction of engineering communication networks to ensure street functionality. Achieving the objective of the project would enable diverse user groups to stay and move around in a well-equipped, safe, socially attractive public outdoor space, thus creating a quality-of-life urban environment focused on a resilient urban ecosystem for climate change mitigation and innovative use of sustainable resources, while ensuring the development of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
