The aim of the project is to reduce the negative impact of air pollution on the environment and human health by implementing measures to reduce air pollution in accordance with the Riga City Council's air quality improvement action programme. In order to reduce air pollution in places where air quality limit values are exceeded and to achieve Latvia's internationally agreed national overall air pollutant emission reduction targets, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving environmental quality, actions at local level are to be supported, where investments are intended for the implementation of measures to reduce air pollution in accordance with the city's air quality improvement action programmes. In this context, Riga City Council, taking into account the actions/measures included in the Air Quality Action Programme for the improvement of air quality in the city, will implement the following actions in the Project: - "Purchase of urban clean-up equipment" (Action 1), i.e. the purchase of technological equipment for the maintenance of streets and sidewalks, ensuring the purchase of 15 specialized, motorized machinery units intended for the reduction of air pollution in the urban environment - the area of the historic centre of Riga (hereinafter - RVC). According to the action programme for improving air quality in the city, Action 1 planned in the project will significantly improve the processes of collecting particulate matter at RVC, thus creating the preconditions for reduced PM10 particulate matter emissions and presence in the urban air in this area; -"Establishment of connection of municipal buildings to the district heating system" (Action 2), ensuring connection to 8 municipal sites. The project plans to achieve a performance indicator to ensure improvement of air quality in the city, namely, the number of inhabitants benefiting from air quality measures - 43 183 inhabitants, i.e. connections to 8 sites and street/site cleaning works at RVC.After completion of the project, the implemented activities will not result in exceeding the upper air quality pollution assessment threshold for any air pollutant (nitrogen dioxide, PM10 and PM2.5 particles, benzene). Overall, the implementation of the project will improve air quality in the city of Riga and will have a positive impact on the environmental ecosystem. Investments will reduce air pollutant emissions into the atmosphereProject funding: Total budget of the project: EUR 2 982 859.00, of which EUR 2 535 430.00 from the ERDF, EUR 310 463.34 from the municipality and EUR 136 965.66 from the cooperation partner, AS Rīgas Siltums (hereinafter – the cooperation partner). 01.07.2024. – 30.06.2026 (24 months).
